7 Red Flags It’s Time to Replace Your Garage Door

Your garage door is one of the first things many people see when they come to your home. It is also an important functional part of your home because you need to be able to open and close it to access your garage. While garage doors can last a long time, eventually they will need to be replaced. Here are some red flags that suggest it may be time for you to get a new garage door.

1. Your garage door no longer opens and closes effectively.  You need to be able to open and close the door in order to get your car in and out and to access your house. If the door is not opening and closing correctly, this is a functional problem and you need to make sure to replace the garage door in a timely manner. A garage door that no longer opens and closes could also be an indicator of broken wires, cords or other parts. This can be a safety issue because the door may someday close when you don’t want it to and someone could get hurt.
2. Your energy bills are going up.  You lose a lot of heat in your house through your garage. Newer doors are more insulated and more energy efficient than old ones. If you have an older house, then it may be time for you to get a new garage door.
3. Your garage door has lots of dents and dings. Dents and dings can be unsightly and make your garage door (and by extension your home) much less attractive.
4. The paint is peeling or cracked. Garage doors can sometimes be retained or repainted. However, there are only so many times that the door can be refinished without starting to simply look old and dated. If your garage door has a lot of cracks and the paint is peeling, it may be time to replace it.
5. Your garage door is uneven. You need to make sure that the bottom of your garage door sits evenly on the floor. If it does not, then this can be a sign of a mechanical malfunction. A garage door that is uneven can allow bugs and pests to enter into the garage and potentially into your home. It can also let more cold air in, having an adverse impact on utility bills.
6. The garage door shakes when it opens or closes, or it moves inconsistently. Shaking and inconsistent movements are a sign that the door is not working correctly. This could someday lead to the garage door falling or collapsing, which is a big safety issue.
7. Your garage door is making unusual sounds.   Unusual noise is an indicator of a problem with the mechanical parts of your garage door. You need to get this problem corrected by installing new doors.

These are some of the key indicators that your garage door is not working and that it is time for a replacement.
